QD Laser, Inc. wins IEEE Photonics Society 2014 Aron Kressel Award for pioneering contributions to the development and commercialisation of Quantum Dot laser diodes
4th July 2014
QD Laser today announces winning the IEEE Photonics Society 2014 Aron Kressel Award "For pioneering contributions to the development of temperature insensitive quantum dot lasers and their commercialisation and mass-production for optical communication systems".
This Award is given to recognise those individuals who have made important contributions to opto-electronic device technology every year. The device technology cited is to have had a significant impact on their applications in major practical systems. The intent is to recognise key contributors to the field for developments of critical components, which lead to the development of systems enabling major new services or capabilities.
A quantum dot laser is a semiconductor laser utilising Quantum Dots in the active layer, which was proposed by Prof. Arakawa and Prof. Sakaki, the University of Tokyo, in 1982. This laser has many unique features such as low threshold current, low temperature sensitivity, and high temperature operation.
Information on QDL's high operating temperature laser diodes can be found here.
Following the collaborative R&D results between Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd. and the University of Tokyo, QD Laser, Inc. has successfully developed high density and high uniformity quantum dot technologies, and commercialized quantum dot lasers as light sources for optical fiber communications.
QD Laser, Inc. is the second Japanese recipient of this award since 2003.
The Awards Ceremony is to be held at the 2014 IEEE Photonics Conference (IPC), San Diego, California, USA on Monday 13th October, 2014.
QD Laser, Inc., encouraged by this award, will continuously develop and provide new semiconductor lasers with unique characteristics to meet customers’ requirements.
