APT supply singlemode laser diodes from SemiNex and QD Laser.

QD Laser is a spin-out commercialising Quantum Dot and Quantum Well technologies developed through a research collaboration between Fujitsu Limited, Fujitsu Laboratories, and University of Tokyo.

Quantum Dot laser diodes are a revolutionary advance over conventional bulk semiconductor lasers due to their unique photon-emission mechanism. In bulk materials the carriers (electrons and holes) recombine and emit photons quite effectively at low temperature. However, when the temperature is raised carriers start to move quickly in the material, resulting in reduced likelihood of recombination and decreased photon emission efficiency.

In Quantum Dot lasers electrons and holes are selectively injected into the structure. At low temperatures, carriers effectively recombine and emit photons whilst at elevated temperatures the injection efficiency of the carriers into the quantum dots remains high so there is minimal fall-off in efficiency. As a result Quantum Dot lasers are virtually temperature-independent between -40°C and 100°C.

QD Laser's Quantum Well laser diodes utilise proprietary materials, structures and manufacturing technologies to produce a range of innovative Distributed Feedback (DFB) and Fabry-Perot (FP) laser diodes including innovative visible modules incorporating Second Harmonic Generation (SHG) of the fundamental DFB wavelengths using Periodically Poled Lithium Niobate.

An overview of QDL's product range can be found in their Products & Services portfolio.

SemiNex are a US manufacturer based north of Boston. They specialise in high performance AlInGaAs material systems and curved waveguide architectures on an indium phosphide (InP) platform. SemiNex's product range includes high power singlemode Distributed Feedback (DFB) laser diodes at 1310nm and 1550nm as well as Semiconductor Optical Amplifers (SOAs) and associated Reflective SOAs (RSOAs), also known as Gain Chips. SemiNex' SOA/RSOA range is available from 1280nm to 1595nm and is used in their narrow linewidth external cavity laser (ECL) products and fully-integrated wavelength-swept modules.
