TOF Sensor

Mobile or other locally independent sensing systems are battery powered by definition and therefore require minimum power consumption. As the AFBR-S50 time-of-flight (ToF) sensor family does not have a native sleep mode, Broadcom have produced an application note describing implementation in hardware and software to minimize current consumption over time.

The AFBR-S50 API allows for switching between the Measuring (33mA) and Initialised (20mA) power states, either through triggering a single measurement or by using periodic start/stop measurements, resulting in an average current of approximately 26.5 mA with a 50% duty cycle. To further optimize the sequence and significantly reduce the current consumption, it is recommended to switch off VDD/VDDL (+5V power supply) during idle cycles.
